This season, plays by the winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature are making their Comédie-Française debut. Gabriel Dufay, one of Jon Fosse’s French translators and directors, dug through the work of this major Norwegian author and put together four unpublished short plays peppered with a few other texts and poems.

  • This composition, served by Jon Fosse’s timeless, enlightening writing, is titled Étincelles (Sparks) as a reference to the “tiny sparks of eternity” which tend to arise inside theatres or within everyday life.
In addition to the dialogue between a man and a woman, gazing at the top of a mountain almost as tall as the sky, the piece includes plays set in a more urban environment in which time is the main character. The plot is fragmented and deployed through pivotal highlights taken from different moments of the timeline; a woman hungry for freedom wishes to reconnect with the man she left; a man moves from his home, fuelled by his passion for a young woman but unsure of whether she will come to him; a man is on a quest to find all things invisible and secret. The audience’s job is to investigate these fragments of life, which may be recounted either at the time of their occurrence, years later, or in the stretched-out time of a disrupted existence. Gabriel Dufay draws a parallel between the vibrancy of these plays and that of Japanese haikus; thanks to a pared-down set, he magnifies the various sides of pieces in which anonymous, often helpless individuals, are given a voice, and look for words to say what can’t be said. Following Claude Régy, who introduced Jon Fosse’s plays in France, and Patrice Chéreau, who first directed them, Gabriel Dufay deploys a pictorial, tangible manifestation of the musical and poetic energy of Fosse’s writing, set to reveal all things secret. He quotes Jon Fosse, who once told him: “I am always amazed when I watch worlds being created.”
